The gift log

A private record of what you've bought, who it's for, where you hid it, and what you did last year.

A wish list is what you'd like. The gift log is the other side: what you've bought, for whom, and how far along it is.

It's private. Nothing in it is visible to anyone unless you deliberately share a log with a circle.

What it's for

Two things, mostly:

Getting through the run-up. In the weeks before Christmas you buy things in ones and twos over a month, and by the time the wrapping starts you've lost track of what you've got, what's still coming, and who you've under-bought for. The log is the list you check.

Remembering last year. Twelve months later, "what did we get them last year?" is genuinely hard to answer. The log answers it.

An entry

A gift name is all that's required. The rest earns its place:

  • Who it's for and Occasion — and both suggest names you've used before, so the same people don't get typed in four different ways.
  • Bought on — when you bought it.
  • Status — Still shopping, Ordered, Delivered, Wrapped, Given. New entries start at the beginning and you move them along from the row itself.
  • Hiding place — where you put it. See below.
  • Notes — what it cost, whether it still needs wrapping, anything else.

Everything on an entry can be changed afterwards, and an entry can be moved to a different log — useful when you buy something in October and only later decide which occasion it's for.

Filtering by status

The useful question in December isn't "what have I bought" but "what still needs doing". Filter the log by status to get that: everything still Ordered, everything that needs Wrapped. Each status shows its count.

The hiding place

Where a present is stashed is the single most effective way to spoil a surprise for someone who goes looking. So:

The hiding place is never shown to anyone else. Not to a circle, not to someone reading a log you shared. It's yours alone, and that's a rule in the code rather than a setting you could get wrong.

Everything else on an entry does travel when you share a log.

More than one log

You can keep several — one per occasion is tidiest. "Christmas 2026" and "Birthdays" stay easier to read than one log with everything in it.

Logging reservations automatically

If you turn it on in Profile → Gift log, anything you claim from someone's wish list is written into a log of your choosing, at Still shopping — because claiming a gift means you'll take care of it, not that you've bought it.

It's off unless you choose it, and adjusting a reservation never creates a second entry.

If you later release a reservation that's in your log, the site asks what to do with the entry rather than guessing: keep the reservation after all, release it and keep your note, or release it and remove the note.

Sharing a log

You can share a log with a circle, and people there can read it — but think before you do. Anyone in that circle can read it, including someone you bought for. Share a log whose surprises are already out: the presents from last Christmas, not the ones under this year's tree.

The hiding place stays hidden even then.
